Dawn of the Dead (2004)
IMDb plot summary: A nurse, a policeman, a young married couple, a salesman, and other survivors of a worldwide plague that is producing aggressive, flesh-eating zombies, take refuge in a mega Midwestern shopping mall.
Directed by Zack Snyder. Starring Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, and Mekhi Phifer.
This movie does a really good job of blending horror and action, and it ends up with a really compelling tone, going back and forth between creepy atmosphere-building scenes and high-energy actiony fights without letting either one really dominate. The fast zombies are pretty terrifying, but so is just the sheer number of them. Overall, it's a really effective zombie horror flick with moderately intelligent characters and a lot of fun scenes. Nicely done. 3.5 stars.
Flickchart: #675 out of 2050, below Top Secret! and Ice Age.
Rent on Amazon for $2.99.
