Hidden Figures (2016)

IMDb plot summary: The story of a team of African-American women mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the US space program.
Directed by Theodore Melfi. Starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, and Kevin Costner.

This is a very solid, well-put-together movie that somehow doesn't have any staying power for me. I think part of it is that the story is so clearly Katherine's even as it's pitched as being all of theirs. I think part of it is that every single moment of the script and the performances are formulaic, even if it's all in ways that are consistent. It just means there aren't any surprises along the way. It plays out and looks and feels exactly the way you expect, and while I'm happy to go along on the ride, at the end of the day I don't connect to it the way I expected to, and that's a shame, because it's a great and important story. Still definitely worth a watch (from an educational standpoint at the very least), and it's a good time even if it doesn't thrill.

3.5 stars.

How it entered my Flickchart:

Final spot: #525 out of 2586, which is too high because Hoodwinked! is too high. Ah well.
