Get Out (2017)

IMDb plot summary: A young African-American man visits his Caucasian girlfriend's mysterious family estate.
Directed by Jordan Peele. Starring Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Catherine Keener, and Bradley Whitford.

(Very minor spoilers ahead.)

I saw the trailer for this back in December but knew nothing about it before then. I remember thinking, "That looks amazing. I have to make sure and see it." It lived up to its expectations -- a smart, scary horror movie. It does a wonderful job of building a creepy atmosphere long before anything overtly scary happens, which means when the pay off *does* kick in, it's well-earned. One of the things I've always thought was fascinating about horror movies was how so many of them tap into cultural fears, and this does that perfectly, especially in light of the Black Lives Matter movement. While this is, admittedly, an over-the-top look at the dangers of being black in today's America, it makes this an interesting and thoughtful flick that is also extremely entertaining. Way to go, Jordan Peele. Make more movies.

4 stars.
