An American Werewolf in London (1981)

IMDb plot summary: Two American college students on a walking tour of Britain are attacked by a werewolf that none of the locals will admit exists.
Directed by John Landis. Starring David Naughton, Griffin Dunne, Jenny Agutter, and John Woodvine.

The tone of this movie is so odd. On one level it's a truly horrific story -- that transformation scene is disturbing to watch -- and on another, the characters treat the whole thing with such casual flippancy and there are such weird moments of humor that the horror almost feels out of place. Almost, but not quite. I think it does work all together, it just wasn't what I expected.

4 stars.
