Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

IMDb plot summary: After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.
Directed by J.J. Abrams. Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

This is a worthy addition to the Star Trek movie series. It's fun, light-hearted, has plenty of nods to the original series (both movies and TV) and, best of all, my very favorite actor Benedict Cumberbatch is the villain. It's always hard for me to see the Star Trek movies as a movie series and not just long episodes of a TV show, so it's not going to stick with me for a terribly long time, but it was definitely a fun viewing. 3.5 stars.

Flickchart: #724 out of 1927, below 12 Angry Men (1997) and above Lolita (1997).

It was fun, but I could have done without [that one key scene near the end] that went past "homage" and into "plagiarism". It felt emotionally dishonest to me.

Beyond that, though, I appreciated that the film had some strong political commentary. That was always a hallmark of Star Trek TV storytelling, but has often been neglected in the feature films. It was nice to see that element again.

Ha. I can totally agree with you on that key scene. The emotional impact of the scene was completely lost there. Jacob and I actually laughed out loud, only to discover nobody else was laughing. It would have worked if it wasn't trying to actually *be* emotional about it - if it was just a silly homage without any actual high stakes attached to it.

I think I know what scene you two are talking about, and I had the same reaction. To laugh, when I probably shouldn't have. It felt out of place.
