Charlie Wilson's War (2007)

IMDb plot summary: A drama based on a Texas congressman Charlie Wilson's covert dealings in Afghanistan, where his efforts to assist rebels in their war with the Soviets have some unforeseen and long-reaching effects.
Directed by Mike Nichols. Starring Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams.

Where this movie is trying to go is interesting, but it just never seems to get there. I've seen much better performances from all the actors involved, and the film never quite figures out how to land, as it just sorts of... runs out of steam and sputters out toward the end. As a result, it never really makes clear what it's trying to say. It seems like it's trying to leave you with a message, but any message that's there is muddled. I'd hoped for something much more interesting, given the great cast, director, and screenwriter. As it is, it just kind of... sits.

1.5 stars.
