Dogtooth (2009)

(Mild spoilers.) This movie is deeply disturbing and uncomfortable to watch. This family is so dysfunctional, without ever acknowledging it is, and without ever any real resolve at the end. I wanted to be a part of this fictional world so I could pull them out of it. It's well done and well acted, but just made me squirm. I'm sure some of these images will stick with me. I'm just not sure what to do with a movie like this. So it gets 2.5 stars and we'll leave it at that.

I really struggled with this one. I initially rated it very lowly, because my first sense of it was that it was the artistic equivalent of "I'm not touching you." That is, it seemed entirely gratuitous but presented itself in just the right manner that you couldn't quite catch it in the act of being shameless porn.

After a month or so, however, I found that it sort of germinated and I came to appreciate its objectives more. Its commentary on the nature of language is truly fascinating, for instance, as well as the broader theme of socialization at large. I had a few thoughtful discussions about it online that helped me find enough depth to this one that I now think fairly highly of it.

It still makes me squeamish to think about, though!
